Where does the leather come from?

All HAYDS leather is sourced locally through a Tennessee leather vendor. Being able to hand-pick hides in person helps ensure every piece feels intentional from the beginning.

What hardware is used?

HAYDS journals use stainless steel and sterling silver hardware to avoid tarnishing, oxidization and unnecessary wear over time. The materials are chosen with longevity in mind.

Are the journals handmade?

Every element is made by hand.

From selecting the hide to cutting, stitching, setting hardware, and finishing details, each journal is individually crafted in small batches in Tennessee.

No mass production. No factory line. Just intentional craftsmanship and time spent getting the details right.

How do I care for the leather?

Real leather doesn't need much. Use it. Keep it out of long stretches of direct heat and standing water. Every journal comes with a care card with simple tips. Good leather gets better with use, not worse.

Will my journal look exactly like the photos?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the type of piece. Ready-to-Ship Drop Pieces: the photographed journal is the exact piece you will receive. Made-to-Order Journals: photos are examples of previous work showing the style, construction, and available options. Because every HAYDS piece is handcrafted using natural leather, variations in grain, markings, texture, color, and character are expected and not considered defects. Your journal will be crafted according to the options you select but will not be an exact replica of the item shown. No two journals will ever tell the exact same story.

How does shipping work?

Each piece is packaged by hand and shipped from Franklin, TN. You'll get a tracking number when it goes out. Most orders ship within a few business days.

Do you take made-to-order requests?

Yes — small tweaks (thread color, hardware, light personalization) and full made-to-order builds are both possible. Reach out by email or DM to talk it through.

Do you accept returns or exchanges?

Because every HAYDS piece is handmade to order and often customized, all sales are final. We do not accept returns, exchanges, cancellations, or refunds. Please review your selections carefully before placing your order.

What if my item arrives damaged?

If your order arrives damaged during transit or you believe there is a craftsmanship issue, please contact HAYDS within 7 days of delivery with photos of the item and packaging. We will review the issue and work toward an appropriate solution.

What is the difference between drop pieces and made-to-order journals?

Drop Pieces are one-of-one journals that have already been handcrafted and photographed. The journal shown in the photos is the exact piece you will receive — once it sells, it's gone. Made-to-Order Journals are crafted after your order is placed. You'll select from available sizes, leathers, hardware, and personalization options, and your journal will be built specifically for you. Because each piece is handmade using natural leather, your journal will have its own unique grain, markings, texture, and character. Photos are examples of previous work and inspiration, but your finished journal will not be an exact replica. Whether you're purchasing a drop piece or a made-to-order journal, every HAYDS piece is handcrafted one at a time and designed to be carried, used, and lived in.

Do you accept custom or commissioned artwork requests?

Yes. HAYDS accepts a limited number of custom and commissioned projects throughout the year. Commissioned work is reserved for larger, highly personalized projects that go beyond the options available through our made-to-order collection — custom artwork, hand-drawn designs, specialty embossing, unique layouts, or fully one-of-a-kind journal builds. Because these projects require additional design time, planning, and collaboration, custom commissions are quoted individually and are subject to minimum project pricing.
